The British-born Charles Brabin was one of the few Edison directors to make the transition to sound, and is probably best remembered for the pre-code shocker The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932). His Edison work, often featuring the Australian actor Marc McDermott, is distinguished by its tight dramatic structure, literary aspirations, and creative use of special effects. The recently rediscovered By the Aid of a Film (the final episode in a serial that is otherwise lost) featured a tour of the Edison studios in the Bronx, with a cameo appearance by the brilliant young director John H. Collins.
